Moving Beyond Goals You can’t manage what you don’t measureâ€"this was the corporate mantra by which I lived for a long time. And it’s total bullshit. We used to measure everything at my old job: There were 29 metrics for which we were responsible every single day (even on weekends). There was morning reporting, 3 p.m. updates, 6 p.m. updates, and end-of-day reporting. I was consumed by numbers. After a while, I even started dreaming in spreadsheet format. Then I realized something: it didn’t really matter. The goals were never as powerful as someone’s internal motivations. People work hard for two reasons: they are externally inspired, or they are internally motivated. Sometimes it’s a combination of both. Some people can be momentarily inspired by goal attainment, but that kind of inspiration is impermanent, and it doesn’t last beyond the goal itself. Conversely, intrinsic motivationâ€"such as the desire to grow or contributeâ€"carries on long after the goal is met. It often carries on in perpetuity. External inspiration can be the trigger, but internal motivation is what fuels someone’s desire. When you discover your true motivation, you don’t need an arbitrary goal. Goals are for the unmotivated. This is one of the reasons I got rid of mineâ€"so I could focus on what’s important, so I could focus on living a life centered around health, relationships, passion, growth, and contribution. I don’t need goals to focus on these aspects of my life, because I’m already motivated by these values. The first person or people who should be caring the burden for elderly care lies within their own family. Within the American culture many family members prefer to put their older members in elder homes. My family is originally from Mexico so I am aware of the family values embedded within Mexican culture. I have never seen a Mexican family have their elderly family members live or be taking care of by somebody else that is not a relative. We live in an American society that does not value the care and need for the elderly and prefer to leave up to state and national departments. Since they were the ones who created the generation in which we live in we should be grateful and provide them with the best care possible within our own homes. Many elders who live in homes receive poor or abusive care from faculty. This is not an environment that we should be letting them live in especially if they are your parents. If they lived there lives to watch you grow and take care of you we should be returning them the favor and taking care of them until their final days. The only exception that I have for not taking care of them would be if they have a serious disability or if they are mentally ill. There are illness where the son or daughter of the family member is not able to care for that person because of circumstances that out of their reach. This virus is spreading at a steady state and will harm many others unless measures are taken immediately. The world has been under attack from such diseases for an unimaginably long time. The consumption of pork should be minimized or completely stopped for the time being, in order to aid the prevention of the virus spreading. However, this is also an airborne, contagious virus, so the government should urge medical and pharmaceutical companies to produce a preventative vaccine. Everyone in the country must be inoculated no matter what the side effect are, as long as we eradicate the virus and stop it spreading. Schools should educate and inform children of the dangers of avoiding the use of preventative measures and should give special classes on cleanliness/hygiene and how to dispose correctly of used tissues, for example. These classes should be especially targeted towards children below the age of twelve, as they are more susceptible to the virus than adolescents. As individuals, we all have a duty to one another. We must be aware of the symptoms of this virus, which are a high temperature, a mucus-filled cough, drooping eyelids, weakness up to the point of fatigue, and sometimes diarrhea and/or vomiting. If we spot a fellow classmate or anyone in a public area such as a mall or shopping market demonstrating any of these symptoms, we must inform the school nurse or ask for assistance in the public area immediately and without the slightest delay. This should not be neglected at all. These people deserve the opportunity for treatment as soon as possible. In school, we should ask our senior staff members to make sure there are hand sanitizers available in every corridor and soap in all the bathrooms, so that we may have clean hands at all times. Extra care should be taken to maintain the sanitation and hygiene of the school bathrooms. Also, everyone must keep a bag of antiseptic wipes in their backpack for times when hand sanitizer is unavailable. This will dramatically reduce the risk on infection and will greatly enhance the safety of the pupils and staff alike. German Keyboards QWERTZ versus QWERTY Isnt the Only Problem! The topic is computer keyboards and cyber cafes overseas-especially in Austria, Germany, or Switzerland. We recently returned from several weeks in Austria and Germany. For the first time, we had an opportunity to use computers there-not my own laptop, but computers both in Internet or  cyber cafes  and at the home of friends. We have long known that foreign keyboards are different from the North American variety, but on this trip  we also learned that knowing and using are two different things. We used both Macs and PCs in the United Kingdom, Austria, and Germany. It was a rather confusing experience at times. Familiar keys were nowhere to be found or located in an entirely new place on the keyboard. Even in the U.K.  We discovered the truth about the George Bernard Shaw  adage that England and America are two countries separated by the same language. Once-familiar letters and symbols were now strangers. New keys appeared where they should not be. But that was just in Great Britain. Lets concentrate on the German-language keyboard (or actually its two varieties). A German  keyboard  has a QWERTZ layout, i.e., the Y and Z keys are reversed in comparison with the U.S.-English QWERTY layout. In addition to the normal letters of the English alphabet, German keyboards add the three umlauted vowels and the sharp-s characters of the German alphabet. The ess-tsett (ß) key is to the right of the 0 (zero) key. (But this letter is missing on a Swiss-German keyboard, since the ß is not used in the Swiss variation of German.) The u-umlaut (à ¼) key is located just to the right of the P key. The o-umlaut (à ¶) and a-umlaut () keys are on the right of the L key. This means, of course, that the symbols or letters that an American is used to finding where the umlauted letters are now, turn up somewhere else. A touch-typist is starting to go nuts now, and even a hunt-and-peck person is getting a headache. And just where the heck is that key? Email happens to depend on it rather heavily, but on the German keyboard, not only is it NOT at the top of the 2 key, it seems to have vanished entirely!-Which is pretty odd considering that the at sign even has a name in German:  der Klammeraffe(lit., clip/bracket monkey). My German friends patiently showed me how to type -and it wasnt pretty. You have to press the Alt Gr key plus Q to make appear in your document or email address. On most European-language keyboards, the right Alt key, which is just to the right of the space bar and different from the regular Alt key on the left side, acts as a Compose key, making it possible to enter many non-ASCII characters. That was on a PC. For the Macs at the  Cafe Stein in Vienna  (Whringerstr. 6-8, Tel. 43 1 319 7241), they had printed out the rather complex formula for typing and stuck it in front of each computer. All this slows you down for a while, but it soon becomes normal and life goes on. Of course, for Europeans using a North American keyboard, the problems are reversed, and they must get used to the weird U.S. English configuration. Now for some of those computer terms in German-terms that you will seldom find in most German-English dictionaries.
